Jennifer Schiavoni is a Partner at Smith Butz, LLC, who concentrates her practice in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Energy Law and Occupational Disease and Railroad Defense. Jennifer’s work has included cases before Pennsylvania state and federal courts as well as Pennsylvania administrative and arbitration boards. Her litigation experience runs the gamut of commercial issues, including breach of contract claims, partnership disputes, corporate governance disputes, non-compete agreements, purchase and sale agreements, and property damage claims. Additionally, Jennifer’s commercial litigation practice regularly intersects with issues related to corporate regulatory requirements within both state and federal laws.
Jennifer’s litigation experience also has focused on a broad spectrum of emerging energy law disputes relating to oil and gas lease interpretation, dual purpose leases, ownership disputes, royalty payments, surface use agreements, pipeline right-of-way agreements, bad faith claims, and condemnation proceedings. This work has included cases involving Actions to Quiet Title, Declaratory Judgment, breach of contract, and injunctive relief. Notably, Jennifer has assisted with several pieces of litigation of statewide impact that proceeded before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, including the Robinson Township, et al. v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, et al. litigation. Jennifer’s appellate experience also extends to significant advocacy before the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court and Pennsylvania Superior Court, including oral argument before the Pennsylvania Superior Court.
Complementing her litigation work, Jennifer actively represents small businesses by providing advice and counsel relating to in-house needs and third-party transactions. Jennifer’s litigation background provides her with an astute ability to target solution-oriented practices before problems arise. Jennifer has developed a forward-thinking approach within both her litigation and transactional work.
Jennifer was admitted to practice law in 2011 and is licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Jennifer graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law magna cum laude where she served as a Managing Editor of the University of Pittsburgh Law Review. Jennifer’s article entitled “Renegotiating the Social Contract: Healthcare as a Natural Right” was selected for publication in Law Review. During her time in law school, Jennifer was a Dean’s Scholarship recipient and received several CALI awards as well as the Community Service Award. Jennifer was also a member of the Order of the Coif.
Prior to attending law school, Jennifer graduated from the University of Pittsburgh magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English Writing and Communications. Recognized on the Dean’s list during all semester, Jennifer graduated with program honors.
